We went around some of the pastures that were planted this year only to discover that some of the seedlings didn’t seem to have emerged. On closer inspection it appears the Red Legged Earth Mite (RLEM) were attacking the seedlings as they were leaving the ground. One little leaf that was only 10 mm long— had 5 RLEM hanging off it. Some of these have had a spray but with the rains we have had it is time to spray again. RLEM are tiny insects but numbers can get up to 10,000 per square metre. It is hard enough growing pasture without these free-loaders!!!!
