Biological Control of Flaxleaf Fleabane – Possibility

CSIRO have been working on biological control of Flaxleaf Fleabane and it is not far off. They have identified a rust that is effective in 2017 and after the normal quarantine requirements started to trial it in 2021.

So far it has shown good response and is only effective on Flaxleaf Fleabane – not Canadian or Tall Fleabane. It reduces seed production which is the main danger of Fleabane – a prolific seed producer.

It is like all rusts and require humid conditions and some heat- something we haven’t been short of this season.

Additionally they have been working on weevils and a midge – so we will see how that goes.
